What is ‘U value’ and why is it important?

U value is the measure of the rate of heat gain or loss through glazing caused by environmental differences between indoor and outdoor air. The lower the value the better the insulation properties of the window or glass.

Why is the window U value different to that of the glass?

The U value for a window is often different to that of the glass alone. The window unit U value is a combination of both the glass and the frame. Variations in the frame material will result in a different overall value based on the material used. Aluminium, timber, and PVC all have different thermal properties. We can help you find the right combination for your project.

What is Low E glass and what are the benefits?

Low E or low emissivity is applied as a very thin laminate coating to one side of the glass. It allows better thermal insulation to be achieved, reducing the heat transfer through the glass.

What is Rw?

Rw is the ‘weighted sound reduction index.’ It is used to measure the effectiveness of the glass as a noise insulator. Measured in decibels (dB), the higher the value of the Rw, the greater the reduction in noise.

What is Shading Coefficient

Shading Coefficient is the ratio of solar heat gain through glass relative to that through 3mm clear glass. A lower number indicates a better performance.

What is Solar Heat Gain Coefficient?

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is the proportion of total solar radiation that is transferred through glass in normal circumstances. A lower number indicates a better performance.

What is Visible Light Reflection/Transmission?

Visible Light Reflection is the percentage of visible light reflected toward the exterior. Whereas Visible Light Transmission is the percentage of visible light that passes directly through the glass. The higher the percentage, the more daylight that gets through.
